Flash must die. Yes. There’s no room for Flash in near future. Flash is an outdated technology. It has not reached the Goal and it never will. It was born as the Holy Grail of Dynamic Web during the times when “Javascript” was a synonym of “Virus”.
I survived those times. Very bad times indeed when a script in infinite loop could mean a ctrl+alt+canc. Flash was the future. There were shining roll-over menus and audio effects. Flash was accompanied by the first shy Java applet that used as much RAM as Windows and that flickered every time you moved the page.
But then what happened? Long story short. XHTML, Firefox 1.0, mature Webkit and the man created Prototype. What role do Flash had in this revolution? Well a very important role. Videos. Stupid games. Photos’ sliders.
Now Flash is synonym of bug, exploit and gigantic cookies. My Mac has crashed only one time in the last three years. Guess how spawn the kernel panic? Bingo.
This is my personal appeal to Google. Switch off the flash interface and move definitely to HTML5+H.264. It’s the time to wash away the last cancer of the old web. Basically you have already coded the 90% of video to support the iPhone.
When Google moves then all will follow. Vimeo is moving and also many others (yes even porn). Many have already understood and are mocked for it.
